Blog Journal #6
Hello everyone!
I hope you all weathered the storm safely, my prayers are with the families who lost their homes or loved ones. I hope to see you all recover soon from the damages of the storm.
This week I am discussing home pages for schools, the ways that I plan to use technology professionally, and my visit to the Technology Sandbox at FSU.
While looking into the home pages for schools and the information they provide publicly (without having to log into an account), I found the website for The Wesley School. It was only recently founded and is a school that extends kindergarten through eighth grade. When reviewing their page I paid special attention to the first, second, and third grade pages. Each of them included photos of the teachers along with their names; there was also information about what the students are learning and important dates coming up for the parents to keep in mind. The largest difference I noticed as the grade increased was that there was more specificity of the different subjects they were learning. For example, first grade was more of an overview of everything and third grade broke their curriculum down into english, history, math, ect. Specifically looking at the first grade, the teachers include a "Teacher's Blog" with a cute intro that would appeal to younger children. This is used to keep parents up-to-date overall with what their children are learning and how to class is doing overall.

Moving forward I imagine myself using technology to accomplish things more efficiently and effectively by, for example, using the calendar in my phone to alert me when I have meetings or important dates and projects/ homework due. Furthermore, there are apps for planners that are more in-depth and could be even more beneficial. Since people, including myself, find themselves on their phones often, then it would be helpful to have something like this that would help me manage my time more effectively. Another way I would use technology to accomplish my professional goals would be by using the numerous programs available to me on the internet to create an online eportfolio which displays my resume in a more digitally pleasing manner. This kind of site would show me as an individual as a well-rounded person. Resumes typically only show the black and white basics of my education, experience, skills, awards, ect. An eportfolio could make me more likely to get a job to show I am more technologically savvy and represent myself in a professional manner that can also display my interests and goals so future employers could know me better.
When I visited the Technology Sandbox, I was amazed by the new advancements in technology that I had no idea had been developed. There were so many creative ways for students to learn and apply themselves in a classroom. One piece of technology that really stood out to me was augmented reality (AR). This type of technology was able to take models and 3D objects and display them in front of you on your phone or tablet. Some of the models included the human skull and brain with its different components, displaying its parts all the way down to the inside of a cell. The apps for these were simple to use and affordable, some were even free. The ability to use this in a classroom would be very beneficial for hands-on learners or those who understand concepts more visually. Personally, I have never been very interested in science and I have had a hard time learning it due to the fact that I was mostly learning from textbooks. Previous types of teaching target those students who learn aurally by listening to teachers read the PowerPoints and show movie and videos. This type of learning can help cover the other two types.
Thank you all for coming back! Stay tuned for my next post this week!
