Welcome back all!

Today we will be discussing the roles teachers and students play when technology is involved in the classroom.
First of all, what influences teachers and students to use technology in the classroom? Society has changed more and more with the passing years as new advancements in technology are made. Each new advancement has allowed for more convenience for people in their everyday lives. These advancements are used daily in our careers or in our homes. This means that in order for students to be successful they need to be familiar with all of this new technology. Students and teachers use technology for both convenience and for educational purposes. For example, SMART boards are common in classrooms as they allow for an easier way for educators to teach and a good way for students to become familiar with technology. The popularity of technology means that students need to learn at least the basics in order to have enough experience to work at certain jobs: setting up presentations, creating power points for meetings, writing up transcripts, creating excel documents and so on.

One of the important standards for educators in the ISTE standards would be learner. This is because as a teacher it is important to understand that while they are the educator and they have the information which will be taught to their students, there is always more for them to learn. Even as a teacher, being an expert in the subject they are teaching, there will be new information to learn everyday. This is especially true in the case of technology, at one point technological advancements were being made by the decade but now they are being made every year and sometimes everyday. With these advancements, as a teacher, it is important to stay up to date with the newest technology in order to pass it along to students. One standard I think would be difficult for me and my skill set would be being a global collaborator as a student. Being able to interact with people globally would be difficult for me as it would be out of my comfort zone. I am not particularly outgoing and I feel this would be something, while beneficial, I would not want to participate in.

To me, being a digital native means that a person is fluent in technology and has grown up around it, allowing them to be familiar with the latest technology. Digital natives are mostly those who have grown up in the past couple decades when technology has started booming. Though, I do not believe that the term should be limited to this group of people. There are people of older generations who have stayed familiar with the technology of the times and may work with it everyday who could be considered digital natives, these people most likely have not been slowed down by the need to acclimate to it. I have seen differences between the way students and teachers have used technology. For example, teachers will be attempting to pull up a presentation on their computer and will need a student to show them how to do this. While teachers have adjusted to the fast paced rise of technology they did not grow up with it, coining them the term of digital immigrants. I have noticed that while I will most of the time find my textbooks and information online, teachers will have a hard time adjusting to this. I find myself giving in and buying the paper copy instead. This hasn't had all that much of an effect on my learning experience but I feel that the lack of technology being used has made it harder for me to learn about new programs and software that could be beneficial to me. I anticipate that I will be using a great deal of technology with my future students so as that they can become more familiar with these new programs and learn new ideas that will benefit them in the future.

Until next time,
Taylor

  1. What about interacting with people online? Is it still not comfortable with you? Some researchers claim that technologies (online communication) are beneficial to introvert who do not feel comfortable with a face to face interaction.
