Blog Journal #3

Happy fall everyone and welcome back!

As I was reading the ELA standards for the different grade levels I was surprised by the curriculum that teachers follow. It seemed like the technology teachings had advanced even since my years in elementary school. Specifically, I looked into the standards of second grade teachings because if I were to be a teacher I feel like second grade would be fun to teach. Some of these included online poster and comic strip creators to show what they learned about the plot and characters from a story. Another includes online scavenger hunts or other tools to help children learn how to navigate and use electronic menus, subheadings, and indexes, ect. I feel as though the education I have now would make it possible for me to teach these to a class since I have worked with many of these things myself in school. However, the other standards involve the children creating their own storybooks using sites such as StoryJumper and pixlr. I am unfamiliar with these and it would definitely require me looking into and learning the technology. I was never taught this when I was younger though I feel as though it would have been beneficial.

One of the CPALMS Educator ToolKit items I would use for the second grade would be the idea called "The Study of Life Cycles". This teaching idea encourages students to be creative and make a book with illustrations and descriptions of the different insects they learned about. I would use this in my lesson plans because it is a fun way for students to learn about science at such a young age. It also encourages their creativity which is important at a young age because it will keep children interested in what they are learning about. Furthermore, it is more hands on learning which could help students to retain the information better and take in what they are learning. Plus, a project such as this one will assess what the students have learned and how well they are understanding the information by having to apply it.

After completing the newsletter design for my intro to educational technology class, I better understand how to complete a design through Microsoft word as well as the different tools available to me. I learned how to insert artwork from the internet through Bing without having to leave Microsoft word, as well as how to place it on a document and incorporate it into a design. Also, I learned how to make a banner using shapes and WordArt to draw attention to a topic. I like the overall colors and theme of my design, being that I targeted it at students in elementary school I wanted to make it fun and colorful. However, I did not want to make it too text heavy since this was for younger students, just the main points was what was important. I did not like how I chose to make the section for parents to cut out and return to me. It proved to be a little too small and would have been better if it were bigger. Overall, I think this assignment will benefit me for my future career because I have now learned the importance of design as well as how to execute these designs using Microsoft word.

Until next week!
