Blog Journal #4
Hello everyone!
It is officially fall and I know we are all jumping to autumn with pumpkin spice lattes and festive decorations. This week we will continue our discussion on the benefits of technology in the classroom, digital natives, and Twitter.
Personally, I had a slow start with Twitter. I did not begin using it until my first semester in college when I had to use it to collaborate for my online English class. I found that I much preferred accounts like Instagram and Snapchat. I mostly retweeted or posted about my opinions on the latest politics, as relating to discourse. Throughout the semester, I mostly interacted with my classmates and teachers and news pages. However, I found this beneficial as it kept me up to date with the latest information going on in the world, while still keeping it relevant to the material I was learning. Plus, I was able to follow accounts that interested me and tweet about the things that I cared about and get others' opinions as well. I think Twitter could be helpful in my future career by helping me to stay updated with what is the latest news and what is the important topics people are discussing that I may need to know about. Being that I am interested in journalism and publishing, while people may find these to be dying breeds as far as careers go, I think staying relevant and using social media to my advantage could keep them alive. By displaying new books coming out or finding the latest stories to work on for journalism.
The digital divide, even as technology is advancing quickly, is still a problem in schools. Many children do not have the access they need to technology as teachers are assigning projects that must be completed on computers and phones. Some children come from lower class families who cannot access computers or internet access or some children are not allowed, depending on the age. As teachers are beginning to involve technology more in their curriculum, it is becoming increasingly more important for students to have access to complete their assignments. However, when children cannot access and teachers do not give them other ways to do so or complete their assignments, students are left to fail. If I were to be a teacher, I believe it would be important at the beginning of the year to find out who has access and who does not and get the specifics to know where to go from there. Then, I would make sure to allow time for students to work on computers at school, and even extra opportunities for students to get their homework done if I am aware they do not have a computer at home. Technology is advancing and it is important that students gain an understanding of this when they are young so as to become familiar with it. Therefore, there must be options provided to assure they are getting the necessary tools to succeed in the future.
The two pieces of software that I would use in my classroom for students would be Kid Pix 3 and Creative Writer 2. Kid Pix 3 is a software where students can create small slideshows and other types of graphics using different templates and it even allows for them to record stories to go along with these. It is great for promoting creativity while learning ways to use technology. Creative Writer 2 is a word processing program that can be easy to use for students who are younger, for example, second grade. There is also clip art and and a way to paint in the program too. I would use these because it is a great way for students to apply their creativity and get familiar with technology at the same time.
Thanks for visiting, until next week!
