Blog Journal #8
Hello everyone,
Now that we are past Halloween, I know we are all very excited to begin moving into the holidays. On another note, to those in Tallahassee with me, I am deeply saddened by the shooting at the Hot Yoga Studio here. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this. Hopefully we can all begin to take steps towards actions that can prevent situations such as this one.
This week we will be talking about my experience in the previous weeks with Diigo, as well as using PowerPoint, and some ideas about teacher professional development.
After working with Diigo over the course of the past couple weeks, I have found that it is very useful not only in the ability to share it with others but also for being able to look back at my annotations. I found it so convenient how I could comment on other people's bookmarks and see their comments as well. Another great benefit is that it is very user friendly. It took me about an hour to get used to using it and practice bookmarking. I think in a classroom it would then be beneficial for students to practice working with this application. For example, if there is a project assigned to the class they could create a group and all bookmark different sources with their annotations and ideas. I find that in these cases the collaboration allows for students to gain new ideas after seeing what others are doing. Furthermore, with other team members this allows for them to share their ideas and collaborate in an online platform that is still fast and interactive. In my individual professional efforts, I could definitely see myself using this moving forward as it is so useful to be able to go back and not only see my bookmarks but also what I was thinking at the time and what I highlighted as important.
Using Bloom's Taxonomy, the ways in which I could use PowerPoint at each level varies due to the many possibilities that PowerPoint has. For example, using the PowerPoint I made this week on an introduction to French. Create could be applied by taking all of the parts of what I am teaching and breaking them down into simpler parts. I did this by starting with how to have a conversation with someone you are just meeting. I broke down how to say hello and goodbye and then how to ask how someone is. Thus creating a whole conversation. Evaluate could be done by deciding what is most important for students to know and finding a way to emphasize that in the powerpoint by making that the majority of the slideshow. In my powerpoint it was important to emphasize gender in speaking french so I repeatedly mentioned gender in many of my slides. In applying analyze to my PowerPoint I did not simply tell how to say goodbye in french, I explained the context of each one, the meanings behind them all, when they would be used, and with whom. By telling the context, students could analyze the importance of when to use which one. Later, I taught how to describe someone's physique (e.g. big, blond, beautiful, young, old, ect.). I used apply by then providing an image in which I asked my students to provide a description of the person. After doing this I used a voice recording of me explaining why I used certain tenses and genders so that the students would be able to understand the facts I had presented them with. At the end of my presentation, I summarized and repeated many of the points made throughout my presentation so that students would know what is most important to remember. I further suggested that they go back and repeat my powerpoint and recordings.
Finally, I would like to discuss teacher professional development, especially with technology. Over the course of the past decade, we have made advancements previously only dreamed of. These advancements have improved teaching, collaboration, and learning techniques all around the world. However, the generation currently teaching did not grow up with this technology and therefore, may find it difficult to adjust to these changes. It is important for teachers to stay up-to-date on the newest technology so that they may teach their students and allow them to reach their potential. Such resources that could be used include Diigo (mentioned above), Pinterest, Twitter, and more. These sites allow for teachers to share new learning ideas, involving technology as well. The ability to collaborate with people all over the world has become so much easier and it would be very beneficial to use these resources to advance in our teachings. A site that I have found that could be used to keep teachers updated with technology would be Science Daily and their technology section. This is updated often with the newest advancements in technology along with how these advancements are already being used in our society. Looking at many of the articles they are very detailed and this is a reliable resource to reference. Plus, teachers could even share these articles with their students so that they could learn more about it as well.
